Engineers merge ideas from biology and electronics to create new device
Friday, November 4, 2011
A team of Yale engineers, including CIFAR’s Mark Reed, have combined knowledge in biology and electronics to create a new device that could one day be used in fluid purification or desalination technologies. The new device, called a nanoscale fluidic diode, tightly controls the flow of ions, such as the electrolytes sodium and potassium, in fluids. The device is special because unlike the diodes found in our electronics, engineers can alter the concentration and direction of ion flow. Read more
